Perspectives on Benoit Tragedy

October 8th, 2007

Jaden returns after a long absence to ask the controversial question

Was the Chris Benoit tragedy good for wrestling?

Jaden — Tellin’ D. Truth

Here is a question have been thinking about for a while now.  Now I in no way condone what Chris did to his wife and his son… But I am beginning to think that this may have led to the wake up call pro wrestling needed.  It is no secret lives of past wrestlers have been snuffed out way before they should have died.  Some wrestlers in the very prime of their lives are now lost to us. That is unfortunately something that is becoming the norm now a days.

The Chris Benoit murders have shined a lot of light on a subject that few outside the business have cared about (For some reason many people out side of the business see the death of a pro wrestler comparable to the death of a lawyer.), and maybe now steps will be taken that will save a few lives.  As great as that side effect of the Benoit Tragedy is, that is not the only way wrestling may be on a better track.

Think back to the last WWE steroid controversy, all the way back to 1993-94.  The WWE (Then known as the WWF) was under attack for allegedly distributing steroids to its wrestlers.  McMahon was put on trial in 1994.  Even though he was later acquitted, the changes the company made started the rebirth of professional wrestling.

In case you forgot it was during those times that smaller wrestlers (Namely Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels) who previously were thought of as too small to be WWE champions were now holding that very same gold belt.  That changed the WWE from a promotion based more on big huge freaks and steroid pumped monsters to a promotion that relied more on work rate and strong story lines.  If it was not for those strides made toward the smaller worker being on top we would not have had the Attitude Era and the 3rd golden age of the sport.

Now fast forward to 2007… With the jacked up juice freaks being once again scrutinized by the media the WWE can once again rely more on the work rate of some of its horribly under used smaller but more talented wrestlers to take the company to a whole new level.  That is if they can get past the bad booking and ego trip of HHH, who cut the feet out of 5 up and coming superstars all in one fell swoop, and in turn damaged the once recovering tag team division, by single handedly and cleanly beating the tag team champions Cade and Murdoch, then beating up a once hot act known as Carlito, and if that wasn’t enough, beating up a popular and promising tag team known as London and Kendrick. Hopefully such BS will be curtailed for the betterment of the company, and Vince McMahon will realize the steps that need to be taken to ensure the survival of his company.  If so we may see the seeds of the 4th Golden Age start to sprout.

Since I live in South Jersey (the best part of New Jersey) I thought I would let people know of a few good places to train in South Jersey.

1st is the Monster Factory.  If you are Brand New to the Sport Here is one of the places I recommend you train.  They have been around for a long time, they have a history of getting their trainees into the WWE, and they run shows almost every Saturday.  If you are interested in Training  at the Monster Factory go to http://www.monsterfactory.com for more details

The 2nd place I recommend is not only for new students to the business but also a place for established and already trained workers can go to improve their skills or to keep sharp.  That place is Tommy Cairo’s Force One Training School.  Run by a real ECW Original and a man who has been up and down the Indy circuit: Tommy Cairo, along with his Trainers “Puerto Rican Bad Boy” Danny Pagan (From the WWC In Puerto Rico), The White Lotus (Someone I go way back with) and Tommy Force (Someone I have managed in the past).  This school has two rings and a lot of experience to draw upon.  They also run shows and the next show will be on October the 27th in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.  If you want to be a part of Force One check out their web page at http://www.forceoneprowrestling.com/

Finally I have a great Place for those workers who want a place to work out in a stress free environment and get to know many of the up and comers of the North East Indy scene.  I am talking about the JWA-United Wrestling School run by my friend, the diabolical Joe Rules and his lovely wife Taylor Nicole Rules.  They run out of the new Brunswick Boxing Gym in New Brunswick, NJ.  If you want to check them out go to http://www.jwaunited.com

*******************************

In another cheap plug I would like to let every one know that I do Play by Play commentary (along with my Color man “Outlaw” Frankie G.) for Damn that’s Wrestling.  I recommend you check out their DVD’s (Especially the ones I do commentary on.).  You can buy them at the DTW shows or by going to http://www.myspace.com/damntv

Well that is the end of my column for the debut of Pro Wrestling Digest.  If you want to send me comments or suggestion for my column, if you want to Book me for managing or Commentary (I do both play by play and color) or just want to talk you can write me at tellindtruth@yahoo.com or check me out on Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/kokushi

Until the next time I write (and who knows when that will be) I bid you adieux.

One Response to “Perspectives on Benoit Tragedy”

Charity

October 10th, 2007 - 12:28 pm

In all honesty, I believe that the Benoit tragedy finally opened the world’s eyes to what is really happening behind the scenes in wrestling. The only problem is, wrestling isn’t the only sport it happens in and it’s not being looked at as closely in other sports as it is in wrestling. It is being looked at, but not as closely. So in a way, it was a bad thing for wrestling in that wrestling is what came under fire for steroid use, but a good thing in that now something can be done about it. Hopefully.
