J. Melton: From the Bleachers
What ECW is doing right …
If you keep up with ECW on Tuesday nights, then you the latest episode was dedicated to All Hallow’s Eve. It was all formulaic comedy filler, and they took a jab at Paul Heyman. But let’s accept it for what it was worth, and realize that next week, the show will be back on track.
Even though the ratings have declined and it could be confused as just another vehicle to promote Smackdown! and RAW,it has accomplished several things ,so let’s look at the positives together.
CM Punk
Let’s face it, if not for ECW, and if not for Paul Heyman, Punk might very well still be in OVW as we speak. Each week, he is getting more and more accustomed to the WWE style of wrestling, and his vignettes and interviews are kept to a minimum to hide obvious flaws. WWE listened to the ECW fans and merch sales, and CM has stepped up to the plate big time when WWE needed him the most.
Big Daddy V
Why didn’t this transformation take place 5 years ago? This has been a complete rebirth of a wrestler who was simply filler material for years. He now is a total monster and definitely has his eyes on future ECW gold .
The Miz
Most might not be high on the former reality TV star, but he has grown by leaps and bounds in the ring and seems to be taking it all in like a sponge. The owner of Kelly’s contract, he has really turned into a young, brash, cocky heel that should have a role in the ECW for years to come .
John Morrison
Am I the only person who loves this character? Are people just too unaccepting of new and different personas? With the hair-do, slo motion cameras, and new verbage, ECW was the perfect fit for a re-do of John’s character, and it looks that in the long run everyone is pleased with it .
Talent trading with SD!
While right now, both brands are simply trading big men back and forth, it could get interesting real quick. Could CM Punk show up on Smackdown one night to defend his title against Matt Hardy? Could Rey Misterio show up in ECW to take on Morrison?
Who knows what could happen in the future, but it is definitely a way to cross promote ECW even more, and also to give other wrestlers more of a spotlight on different shows.
With the merger, how cool would it be when Chavo Guerrero comes back, if he became a permanent mainstay on ECW ?
I believe that the positives of ECW strongly outweigh the negatives.
