The Return of the Steel Asylum Match
“Black Machismo” Jay Lethal, “The Guru” Sonjay Dutt, “Maple Leaf Muscle” Petey Williams, Johnny Devine, Curry Man, Shark Boy, Eric Young, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Jimmy Rave, & Super Eric
The X Division superstars battle inside the steel dome to try to escape.
The tag teams work together in this wild and crazy spot fest. It’s a fitting opening, with the action getting the crowd up and going for the rest of the show. Dutt and Lethal continue their feud, bashing each other into the steel walls of the cage. There’s way too much going on to try to describe all the action; I think every wrestler hit his finisher at some point.
In the end, Curry Man was nearly out of the cage when Sonjay Dutt stopped him. Jay Lethal was right behind Dutt and managed to catch him. Black Machismo fought off The Guru to escape through the opening of the Steel Asylum cage.
They cut to Jeremy Borash interviewing Jim Cornette, who says that he’s very pleased and excited about tonight’s PPV. Mick Foley enters, and Jim gives him a big hug and says he’s glad to see him. He tells Foley to take his chair. Foley thanks him and says he remembers when Cornette used to let him ride with the Midnight Express, and at night he’d listen to the goings on in Sweet Stan’s room. Cornette interrupts and says they’ll talk about that later. Then Cornette says he has to leave, and asks Mick to stay in his office.
Velvet Sky and Angelina Love barge in on Mick to complain about the color of their M&Ms. They are surprised not to see Cornette there, but it doesn’t slow down their whining one bit. While saying they only want blue ones, Angelina throws them one at a time at Foley, who tries to catch them in his mouth. They make fun of Mick’s shirt, so he tells them it’s chamois. They throw more M&Ms, and he tells them it’s counterproductive to throw the blue ones, so they leave in a huff.
Borash quips, “Chamois, eh? I’d rather be in Velvet.” Foley laughs and they high five.
Knockouts Bimbo Brawl
ODB, “War Machine” Rhino, & Rhaka Khan
vs.
The Beautiful People, Angelina Love, Velvet Sky, & Cute Kip
Referee: Knockout Law Traci Brooks
Before the match, Rhino hugs his friend Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers, who is seated in the front row.
A lot of this match was played for laughs, with Velvet Sky tagging in to face Rhino, and Kip later tagging in to face Rhaka Khan, who takes out him out with the crotch claw. Kip later hits ODB in the head with the cosmetic case, spilling makeup bottles all over the ring. The fans were solidly behind ODB, Rhino and Khan. In the end, Rhino gores Cute Kip to get the pin and the win for his team.
Lauren talks to Consequences Creed, who says that the Sheik’s spitting on the red, white, & blue disgusts him, and tonight he’s fighting for all proud Americans.
X Division Championship Match:
Sheik Abdul Bashir (C)
vs.
Consequences Creed
Sgt. Daniel Casara, a decorated and severely injured Iraq War veteran from the Chicago area, came out to the ring to introduce Consequences Creed. After he left and was on the ramp to leave, Bashir yelled something at him in what I guess was Arabic. It was a very smart choice to leave it with fans not being able to understand his comments, because he got the boos, but they conveyed his bad attitude without being offensive.
Creed’s high energy and athleticism get the crowd going, chanting, “Let’s go Creed!” and “USA!” Bashir used an impressive array of textbook holds and old school moves and short cuts, including the sleeper hold. This allows for the classic of the referee holding up Creed’s arm three times, and the crowd still roars when his arm springs up on the third time. For the finish, Bashir rolls up Creed and holds the ropes to get the pin and retain his title.
Mick Foley is telling war stories to Jeremy Borash when Kong and Raisha Saeed burst in on them. Saeed demands to know where Cornette is. Foley starts a long story about Cornette, but Saeed interrupts, “It doesn’t matter why you are here!”
Foley replies, “Wait a second, that’s gimmick infringement, and my friend the Rock isn’t going to like that. I have him on speed dial.”
Saeed tells Foley that Kong says to tell Cornette that she won’t be responsible for what who does to her opponents tonight.
Foley decides Saeed is misunderstood and needs a visit from his friend Yurple the Clown, who happens to live in the Chicago Area, so he calls Yurple on the phone.
Knockouts Championship Match:
Taylor Wilde (C)
vs.
Awesome Kong with Raisha Saeed
vs.
Roxxi
Roxxi and Taylor team up against Kong until Kong bails out of the ring. Kong returns when Wilde is about to pin Roxxi. Saeed grabs Roxxi’s leg and pulls her out to the floor, where she puts the boots to her. They continue with a high impact, high velocity match that keeps the fans loud and involved throughout.
Roxxi is the clear fan favorite in this match, getting more cheers than anyone. The match end with Taylor Wilde retaining her title by pinning Roxxi with a bridging suplex. A surprising number of boos could be heard from the crowd as Wilde left with the belt. When TNA has a clear fan favorite in Roxxi, I have to question why they keep pushing Taylor Wilde, who in the past has received little fan reaction, and now is getting outright boos. If Roxxi had gotten a title run like hers, they’d have a huge star by now.
They cut to AJ Styles in Cornette’s office , telling Foley how happy he is to see him in TNA. Team 3D interrupt, telling AJ he’s a huge mark. AJ leaves, and Mick asks Brother Ray why he stole his red flannel shirt gimmick. Ray calls Foley “Cactus,” and says it looks better on him. Cornette returns so Foley can go get ready to be Special Enforcer, and Foley says he’s tonight he’s going to be “Sock of the Walk.”
Monster’s Ball World Tag Team Championship Match
Beer Money Inc., James Storm & Robert Roode (C) with Jacqueline
vs.
The Latin American Xchange, Homicide & Hernandez
vs.
Team 3D, Brother Ray & Devon
vs.
Abyss & Matt Morgan
Special Referee Steve “Mongo” McMichael
Forks, kendo sticks, trash cans, chairs, a flaming table, non-flaming tables, crutches, cheese graters, cookie sheets, and thumb tacks are among the weapons employed in this bloody and brutal brawl. The violence immediately spills out of the ring and around ringside. One of the highlights is when Homicide flies over the top rope to hit Beer Money, who are on the floor, with a tope con hilo. As soon as they get to their feet, Hernandez follows up by sailing over the top rope onto them.
Homicide uses his trademark fork to jab and carve up Devon’s forehead. Throughout the match, however, Abyss refuses to use any weapons, even after Ray rips open the monster’s forehead with a cheese grater. Morgan displays his power by suplexing both members of Beer Money at the same time.
Beer Money keeps taunting McMichael until he finally takes both of them out, one with a shove through the ropes, and the other with a clothesline. Another high point is when Matt Morgan goes up to the top to hit Beer Money and Hernandez with a flying cross body block.
3D overpower Abyss with chair shots and drag him up the ramp. When Abyss starts to recover and fight back, Johnny Devine comes out and whacks him with a kendo stick. Then he sets up a table back by the ramp, and all three douse it with lighter fluid and set it on fire. Ray and Devon power bomb Abyss through the flaming table. Crew members come right over with fire extinguishers, and Abyss is done for the match.
Another high point is when James Storm comes off the top at Hernandez, who catches him and turns it into a sit out power bomb. LAX hit Storm with the Gringo Cutter, but Jackie jumps Mongo to stop the count. Mongo spanks her and ejects her from the ring. Morgan carries big Hernandez around and suplexes him. Later Hernandez gets to display his power by border tossing Morgan.
Hernandez sets up a table in the ring, and dumps a bag to tacks on it. 3D puts Hernandez through the tack covered table, but James Storm spits beer in Devon’s face, and Roode steals the match by pinning Hernandez.
Three Way War Match
Booker T with Sharmell
vs.
“The Instant Classic” Christian Cage
vs.
“The Phenomenal” AJ Styles
AJ starts off taking it right to Booker while Cage stands back an observes for a while. It’s quickly every man for himself, with no partnerships tonight. The first high spot comes when AJ suddenly moonsaults backwards off the ropes onto Christian on the floor, instead of onto Booker in the ring, as it had appeared was his intent. This is another maximum energy, maximum impact match, as everyone seems intent upon giving his all.
Another high point comes when AJ springs off the ropes, over Christian, to nail Booker with a flying forearm. The split second timing of some moves is simply amazing, such as when AJ drop kicks Booker, and then Christian slips in and clotheslines Booker over the ropes as AJ rolls backward off Christian’s back. When Cage turns back, AJ nails him with a drop kick. Later, Booker misses an axe kick, and AJ grabs a flying arm bar and locks it in.
After numerous near falls, Christian hits the Unprettier off the top rope on AJ. Before Cage can go for the pin, Booker hits him with an axe kick off the ropes and pins Christian for the win.
Lauren tells Kurt Angle he has what he wants tonight, Jeff Jarrett one on one in the ring. Angle says it’s not one on one if Foley’s there, but he will beat them both. Then he tells Jeff’s 3 little daughters not to worry, their daddy will stop bleeding eventually.
Jeremy Borash interviews an emotional Jeff Jarrett, who says that his daughters kept him going through the last two years, and tonight he does it all for them.
Grudge Match
“King of the Mountain” Jeff Jarrett
vs.
Kurt Angle
With Mick Foley as Special Enforcer
Both Foley and Jarrett get big pops from the crowd when they enter, and Angle gets boos. Jarrett gets a “Thank you Jeff!” chant, too. Angle goes for an amateur style takedown right off the bat, trying to embarrass Jarrett. Then he goes for a side headlock takedown. Jarrett fights to his feet and gets loose, but Angle locks it in and takes Jeff back down again. Jarrett fights out and hip tosses Angle, then gets his own side headlock on Angle. Angle powers to his feet with Jarrett still holding on; he back drops Jeff, but it’s still not enough to break the head lock. Angle powers back up and forces Jeff into a corner, where the ref makes him break, but instead of backing away, Angle sneaks in an illegal punch and knee lift. He follows with a blow to the back of the head and a vicious German uppercut, while the ref does nothing but warn him.
Jarrett escapes, Irish whips Angle into the ropes, leapfrogs when Angle comes back, and then hits Angle with a beautiful drop kick. Jeff follows up by clotheslining Kurt to the floor, and then springs off the ropes to hit Angle with a cross body block. As the crowd chants, “TNA!” Jeff slams Angle into a ring rail. Jeff comes off the ring apron, but this time Angle dodges and Jeff hits the ring rail.
They return to the ring, where Angle puts the boots to Jarrett, then hots him with an uppercut and chokes him in the ropes. Jeff makes a comeback and the crowd cheers as he does the Fargo Strut. Angle quickly recovers and punishes Jeff, then goes back to the side head lock. Jeff powers up, escapes with some elbows and an upper cut. Angle charges, Jeff floats over, and then rolls up Angle for two. Angle answers with a brutal clothesline, but gets two.
They battle on, at one point slugging it out, and later Angle tries a release belly to belly suplex, but no one gets more than a two count. The epic struggle continues, and Jarrett locks in the figure four. Angle tries for the ropes, and finally makes it. Angle goes for three German suplexes, but only gets two. Jeff counters out of an Angle Slam attempt, but Kurt applies his ankle lock. Jarrett tries for the ropes, but can’t make it, so he finally rolls through and out of it. Angle tries for a pin, but gets two. Kurt goes up for his moonsault, but Jeff rolls out of the way.
Ref bump. Jarrett hits the Stroke and pins Angle, and Foley rushes in to make the count, but Angle kicks out at two. Foley goes over to revive the ref, and while his back is turned, Angle low blows Jeff. Then Angle goes out for a chair, but Foley follows and tells him he can’t use the chair. Angle waffles Mick with the chair, then goes into the ring and hits Jarrett with it too. The ref finally wakes up, but Mick pulls him out of the ring and stops the count. The irate Foley enters the ring, slugs Angle, pulls out the sock and clamps the mandible claw on him. Jeff gets up and smashes his guitar over Kurt’s head as the fans roar. Mick counts the 1-2-3 as the fans go wild. This is my choice for match of the night, and a match of the year candidate.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Samoa Joe (C)
vs.
“The Icon” Sting
Sting enters to cheers from the crowd, while Joe gets a loud chorus of boos when he climbs the turnbuckles and hold up his belt. This match goes to the outside early on, with Joe doing a suicide dive over the ropes onto Sting, and they battle up the stairs into the crowd, where Joe manages to get some cheers, but the boos are still in the majority. Joe jumps over a railing and onto Sting on the steps below. They brawl back down the steps to the ring, and the advantage goes back and forth. The fans chant, “TNA!” At some point Joe’s nose begins to bleed, but it soon stops.
They finally return to the ring, where Joe tries for a muscle buster, but Sting escapes and DDT’s Joe. Joe hits Sting with a power bomb but gets two, so he tries the STF, but Sting gets to the ropes. Sting hits the Stinger Splash and a muscle buster, but Joe gets right up. Joe hits Sting with the Scorpion Death Drop, and Sting returns the favor, getting right up. The brawl continues, and Joe gets more and more boos as he gets the advantage. Joe refuses to go for a pin, as he did with Booker. Joe gets Sting in the ropes and keeps punching him, so referee Earl Hebner pulls him off.
Kevin Nash strides down to ringside as Joe argues with Hebner. Sting reaches for his bat, but Nash takes it away. Joe clotheslines Sting and finally goes for a pin, but gets two. Joe charges Sting, but Sting ducks, and Joe knocks Hebner down and stumbles into the ropes. When Joe turns around, Nash hits him in the back with the bat, and the crowd cheers. Neither Sting nor Hebner see it. Sting hits Joe with the Scorpion Death Drop and becomes the new TNA Heavyweight Champion. Joe’s fans are unhappy, but most of the crowd cheers Sting as Nash returns to the locker room with the bat.
