Lose Weight, Get Healthy Pt 2…

Facts & Yummy Food Ideas.
I’ve been involved in the fitness industry all my life; it’s the one thing I’m more qualified than most to help others with. And I realize that while there are a lot of diets out there and “get thin quick” scams, there is a real lack of information available about what’s good to eat, and what to limit/avoid.

97% of the obesity isn’t caused by a sickness… but nearly 100% of sickness IS caused by obesity.

Obesity is of an epidemic proportion in America. Actually, SUPER obesity is more the problem.  What is obese? Being more than 20% over your ideal weight.  So, if for your height and body structure, you should be 170 lbs, but are 204 lbs (34 lbs is %20) you are obese and now develop dangerous health problems. We all know and love someone obese. Ignoring it doesn’t make it OK. If they were doing hard drugs, would you still look away? The end result is the same.

Our children are overweight, too. When kids are overweight, it’s especially disturbing since their metabolisms are at their highest rate. Fat children will grow up to be fat, sick adults. If that’s not child abuse, I don’t know what is. If more people spoke out about this, something might be done to help. Instead, we turn away and bite our tongues. Don’t be afraid to hurt someone’s feelings if it helps them in the long run. Sometimes it takes a swift kick in the ass and some disapproval to let people know that some things are not ok.

Emotional eating is the main reason for overeating. We need to take control of ourselves, manage emotions and learn to make the right food choices. I can’t counsel you, but I can give you ideas what healthier food choices are out there.
The key thing if you want to change and maintain healthy habits: It’s not a DIET. It’s a lifestyle change.
Suggestions:

–Order sandwiches on 1 slice of dark bread, open faced (or wrapped in lettuce.)
–Center your meals around protein, fruit & veggies.
–Eat little or no processed foods. It doesn’t take any more time to eat fresh than it does to sit in a fast food line and pick something up.
–Cut out the obvious. Fried foods, biscuits, fatty stuff. You might not know what’s good to eat, but I’m sure you know what’s *NOT* good to eat.
–Eating on the go? Try these: Panera (Harvest salad with chicken), Qdoba (grilled naked chicken burrito) or Boston Market (Ham is lean). Subway is always a good choice as well. Wendy’s grilled chicken w/ honey mustard is good; toss half the bun.
–Chose grilled or sautéed. Choose brown rice. Choose sweet potato. Choose fruits and veggies.
–Cut down & avoid “whites”. That’s potatoes, French fries, white bread, chips, pancakes, waffles, white sugar, pasta, white rice, etc.
–Watch out for seemingly “healthy” calorie filled lies. Muffins? NO. They’re the same as cupcakes. Baked chips and snacks? Generally, no. “Whole grain” snacks?  Doubtful. If one serving (read the labels) has over 125 calories (and is just 6 chips), skip it. Many small containers are multiple servings. Example: Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. That’s not a single-size; it’s 4.5 servings! Who eats that little?? Just skip it and find something else.

–Remember: the key to losing weight is to take less calories in than you use in a day.  Otherwise, you’ll store extras as fat.
Calories per day: Men: 500-2400. Women: 1300-2000.

Figure out how many times you eat - (aim for 5x/day) - then figure out how many calories you should keep your meals and snacks within for your range. If you eat more for one meal (steak), eat less for the next (grilled veggies, fruit, salad, eggs and egg whites, lean ham, chicken or fish). Once you find the foods you like and get into a routine, you won’t think about calories, you’ll just eat healthy and get thinner. But you first need to know what you’re eating.
Eat less, but smarter. Most plates of food we eat (in America) are almost double the size they should be. If you’re out, take half home. If you’re cooking at home, use smaller plates.

–Use caffeine. It’s one of the best ways to drop extra weight. There are a lot of supplements that have caffeine in them. It boosts metabolism, helps burn fat, keeps your hunger at bay and gives you energy.

–A training trick a lot of fitness models and wrestlers do for faster results is this: Walk for 2 minutes, run for 1 minute. Walk for 2, run for 1. Keep that up for 45 minutes. It really works.

–Cut out all soda, diet soda and juice. Drink (non caloric) teas & waters instead.

–Gotta cheat? OK. If you’re craving something, try to give it a half hour. Do something else, see if you still want it. If you do, it’s better to have a smaller portion of what you want than it is to eat the entire house instead. Also, cheat with protein/fruit based cheats. Example: cheesecake. There are some reduced calorie ice creams that are true to the original versions now. Soft serve ice cream is low calorie, too. Almost anything in moderation is ok. The trick is to know moderation.

Most of these meals/side dishes take less than 20 minutes to make.

Superfood: Greek Yogurt.

Greek yogurt is a regular part of the French diet. And we all know France kicks their fat people out… unless you’re spending money and have a tourist visa.
-90 calories, 0 fat, 15 grams of protein per serving.
No additives. It doesn’t get much better that that.
But you have to get real Greek yogurt, such as Oikos or Fage (thicker custard style). The normal grocery store stuff doesn’t cut it. Find it in your “healthy” store section.
Add a big spoonful of honey to sweeten –and some blueberries if you wish.

Barbeque Chicken & Apple Salad

-BBQ sauce
-dry bbq rub
-chicken breast
-Bacon bits
-mozzarella cheese, shredded
-lite Ranch dressing
-smoked Almond slivers
-1/2 avocado, cut into small chunks
-1/2 apple
-Lettuce/mixed greens (pre packaged is fine)
-ground black pepper
-cilantro (if you have it)
Easy, fast and totally healthy, this is packed with protein and “good” fats.
Grill the chicken with dry bbq rub.
Mix the rest of the salad to taste, add in apple chunks.
Put chicken on a separate plate and cut up. Cover in BBQ sauce. Add to the top of your salad, then mix with ranch dressing and freshly ground pepper.
Add a big glass of Arizona sugar-free peach iced tea and you’re set!

Grown Up Grilled Cheese
-Sourdough or crusty grain bread
-mayo
-real butter
-thin sliced salami
-horseradish cheddar cheese
-american cheese
-apple, thinly sliced
-oregano
Cut bread into thin slices, add mayo. Add a dash of oregano & black pepper.
Melt butter, paint onto outsides.
Add cheddar, salami, thinly sliced apple and american. Grill on med/low heat until browned and crusty. Yum.

Asian Stir Fried Been Spouts

-half bag (per person) of washed mung been sprouts
-Low sodium soy sauce
-Butter, salt, pepper
-Kraft ginger dressing
Stir fry in a few pats of butter on a med high heat. Salt and pepper. While sprouts are still crispy, add enough soy sauce to flavor. Stir quickly and remove from heat. Add 1-2 tbsp of ginger dressing on top, salt & pepper and mix well.

Healthy Egg McMuffin

-Cinnamon Ezekiel bread (freezer section, flourless bread)
-ex lg (cage free) egg and 1 egg white
-Mozzarella cheese
-Ham/Canadian Bacon/Turkey bacon
Toast bread & butter or add mayo, serve as open faced. Fry egg and white, layer grated mozz, grilled ham and egg on top.

–Desert/sweet snack:
Sugar free pudding with lite whipped cream.

–Brown rice products like crackers are pretty good.  Nut Thins by Blue Diamond are also amazing. They’re a little pricey, but really delicious. The Smokehouse Almond is incredible with spicy roasted red pepper hommus.

–Hard-boil a few (cage free) eggs for a quick snack or meal. Store them in a ziplock bag to keep your fridge fresh. Easiest way to make and keep the shell from sticking: place eggs in a pot of water, put on stove. Once they hit they boil, shut heat off and cover. Leave for 15 minutes. Run pot under cold water. Viola! Shell won’t stick to egg when you peel. Pair eggs with Greek yogurt and a slice of Ezekiel toast for a fast, healthy meal.

Chicken & Pears:

If you make this dish for a date, you will get the girl that night. Guaranteed.
-pounded/thin chicken breasts
-1 pear, thinly sliced
-herbs de provence, salt, pepper
-olive oil
-fresh garlic
-apple cider
-smoked gouda cheese, thinly sliced
Heat olive oil in skillet, toss in spoonful of garlic (to liking), then chicken breasts. Cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, herbs de provence and remove. Set aside and cover with very thinly sliced smoked gouda. Cover.
Return to skillet and brown the pear slices. At the end, turn up the heat and add about 1/4 cup of apple cider, let boil out.
Pour pear slices and cider sauce w/ garlic over chicken.

The Best Pancakes in the World:

- Met-RX pancake mix
- Add a little cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice), honey/brown sugar
- (optional) extra scoop of vanilla whey powder
- (optional) bananas, walnuts or berries
Spray pan with butter flavored Pam, cook in griddle until browned to liking.

Sautéed Asparagus

-stalks of asparagus
-sea salt
-pepper
-olive oil
-minced garlic
Wash and trim ends off asparagus. Cut stalks into 2 inch pieces or leave as long stalks, whatever your preference. In pan on med/hi heat, drizzle olive oil and add garlic. When hot, toss in asparagus, salt and pepper. Sautee a few minutes until still crisp and serve.

Protein Cinnamon Apple Cups

A really easy, guilt free tasty snack. They don’t look very pretty, but they get the job done and can be used as a side dish. This recipe can be halved.
-non-stick cooking spray
-16 oz cottage cheese
-1 cup egg whites
-2 tbsp cinnamon
-6 packets of Splenda/Stevia
-2 med chopped apples
Spray a 12-cup muffin tin with non-stick spray and preheat oven to 325 F. In large bowl, stir all ingredients. Fill cups to top and back for 35-40 mins. Before serving, let cool to firm.  These are sweet AND good for you!

Fruit and Walnut salad

-Strawberries, blackberries & blueberries
-honey
-walnuts
-avocado
-apple
-peach
Clean and toss berries in a bowl. Chop up apples, peach & avocado, add in, sprinkle chopped walnuts and drizzle w/ honey. You can also add a tbsp of lemon juice if you’d like.

Peach Crisp

-2 peaches
-granola
-butter,brown sugar
-pinch of cinnamon, if desired

Split the peaches in half, remove pit. Put a pat of butter in the middle, sprinkle with brown sugar(& cinnamon)–

stuff with granola…

bake at 375 F until tops are browned.

Jamaican Jerk Shrimp & Brown Rice

-Jerk Seasoning
-Shrimp (or you can cheat by getting the frozen version of Jerk Shrimp)
-Pineapple (optional)
-Instant brown rice (again, cheat with the microwave version if you’d like)
Sautee shrimp, add seasoning. Pour over brown rice. Add pineapple chunks if you’d like. Totally healthy and FAST!

The most important step to losing weight is in your head… when you decide you are going to do it -and you mean it.

Hunter Ha Ha…

There was a bus going to Cleveland and there was a nun in it. The bus stopped to pick up a guy, and he was a hippy. The hippy sat next to the nun and said, “Hey baby want to have sex with me?” The nun slapped him across the face.

Well as the hippy got off at his bus stop, the bus driver said, “Hey I see that nun praying every night at that cemetery over there.  If you go there dressed as God you could probably get her to have sex with you.”

The hippy said thanks and got off the bus, then got dressed up like God with the robes and cream and powder and hid behind a grave in the graveyard. Well, just as the bus driver said, the nun came to pray at around six thirty. The Hippy popped out from behind the grave and said, “I am God!”

The nun said, “Oh great and powerful one what can I do for you?”
The hippy said, “You must have sex with me.”

So she did. Then the hippy jumped up and said, “Ha ha I am the hippy!”
