WWE diva Natalya: Pretty in pink but red hot in the ring

– Mike Mooneyham, Lipstick, Dynamite, & Glowworms

Don’t tell Nattie Neidhart that there’s something she can’t do.

She may be pretty in pink and hot as a firecracker, but to the lovely WWE diva known as Natalya, there isn’t anything that can’t be accomplished through hard work and perseverance.

Betty Boucher

by Mike Mooneyham (original date of column 12/10/2006)

Barbara Ellison stands barely 5 feet tall, and loves to talk about gardening and grandchildren.

She’s also pretty good at throwing a fishing line or a softball when she’s not working at the Summerville Lowe’s where she has been a fixture for the past 13 years.

‘Macho Man’ was a true original

-Mike Mooneyham

.

I was dining one evening with Ted DiBiase Sr. when I noticed that our waitress had a rather puzzled look on her face.

.

She approached DiBiase, the self-proclaimed “Million Dollar Man,” and said rather sheepishly, “I know you from somewhere.”

.

DiBiase just smiled, and before he could put down the tip, the waitress blurted out, “Now I remember! You’re the famous wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage!”

Moolah Enjoyed Fabulous Career

By Mike Mooneyham

.

NOTE: This article was originally published Nov. 18, 2007.

For as long as I can remember, Mary Lillian Ellison has been “one of us.” Born in the small Kershaw County town of Tookiedoo, and living most of her life in Columbia, she was as much a part of the state as the palmetto trees that line its landscape and the history that surrounds its every corner.

She was, in fact, a piece of history herself, becoming one of the greatest female performers to ever step into a professional wrestling ring and the most powerful woman outside the squared circle.

The Life & Times of Penny Banner

By Mike Mooneyham

.

NOTE: This is a combination of two articles that were originally written in 2008 and 2004.

.

It’s never easy writing about the passing of a pro wrestling legend. It’s even harder when the legend happens to be a close friend.

Penny Banner, whom I’ve always known and will forever know as “Pretty Penny,” left us early Tuesday [May 12, 2008], peacefully at home and in the arms of her beloved daughter, Wendi.

The records may list her chronological age as 73, but to those who knew Penny, she was ageless, timeless and forever young.

“When I think of my dear friend Penny, I think of ‘57 Chevys, poodle skirts and rock and roll. God bless her.  She was the eternal teenager right up until she left this earth,” Les Thatcher said.

Amen to that.

WELCOME, MIKE MOONEYHAM

Lipstick, Dynamite & Glowworms, Part 32

Bette Boucher, The Gorgeous Tornado

.

Introduction by The Phantom of the Ring:

This column marks the debut of noted journalist and mat historian Mike Mooneyham to this series. He is writer who truly needs no introduction, and I can safely state that no one – no one – knows the history of women’s wrestling better than Mike. Besides being one of the first journalists that deviated from the hitherto strict party line of not taking professional wrestling seriously, he also treated the women’s side of the game with a fairness and comprehensiveness not even seen within the promotions themselves.
