Funk’s Corner – Tough Tony Borne

Tough Tony Borne’s finishing hold was the Cannon Ball Jump from the top rope landing seat first on his opponent. Tough Tony’s standard offer was for anyone to lay down and take his Cannon Ball Jump from the top rope. If they were able to come to their feet within 30 seconds Tony would give them $500.

In the spring of 1998, I was working for then WWF as head Coach of the Funking Dojo wrestling training camp in Stamford Connecticut. I received the list of trainees for the third wrestling training camp. On the list was Olympic Gold Medalist, Kurt Angle. “Hey what a thrill to coach an Olympic Gold Medalist!”

Funk’s Corner – “Karate” Kinji Shibuya

Kinji Shibuya dropped into a defensive football stance and stepped forward bringing his powerful arms up charging and lifting me at the same time.

Kinji said, “You have got to fire out of your stance make contact and lift your opponent at the same time, look for the ball and get rid of the blocker.”

Funk’s Corner – Gene Kiniski, “Give Him Hell Kid”

Giant Gene Kiniski caught me with a double leg pick-up and spun me around in a “Giant Swing” (Grabbed me by the ankles and spun me 360 degrees around and around). I could see the ring light at the Amarillo Sports Arena spinning overhead then I nearly passed out but came to as Gene slowed the Giant Swing and dropped me to the mat. Gene jumped on top of me with a rear chin lock and said, “Here comes your mother, kid. She is coming to help you. Dorothy is coming to ringside.”

Funk’s Corner – NWA World Championship in St. Louis / Dory Funk Jr. vs Baron Von Raschke

Baron Von Raschke worked the “Sly Foreigner” part claiming to be from Germany, wearing the Iron Cross, doing the Goose Step and using the Brain Claw for a finish. The real Jim Raschke may have been even more imposing. Jim Raschke was a two time All American Amateur Wrestler from University of Nebraska.
